CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM

This course is a hybrid with both online and in classroom requirements. The student should already be familiar with Blackboard Learning Systems, formerly WebCT.


COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Designed to analyze issues of immediate concern to the justice system including domestic violence, recruitment, police review, drug and narcotic abuse, controversial prosecutions and voter initiatives directed at the criminal justice system.

TEXTBOOK: When Culture’s Clash

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of the course students should be able to:

1. Evaluate existing and proposed remedies to domestic violence.
2. Understand the recruitment process and be able to evaluate current practices.
3. Understand the importance of ethical decision making in law enforcement.
4. Analyze and apply legal principles to the decision to prosecute high profile or controversial criminal cases.
5. Summarize the impact of current voter initiatives on law enforcement actions.
6. Understand the concept of Community Policing.





Course Requirements/Learning Assessment:

1. Attendance every Thursday 150 Points
2. Online research assignments – 8 papers, 2 to 4 pages to discuss in class. 200 Points
3. Participation both on line and in class. 150 Points
4. In depth Final Presentation on a topic covered in class 100 Points

Extra Credit (arranged with the instructor) 50 points
